Bernadette Camille Smith, the third child of the late Charles Allen 'Baron' Smith and Millicent Marette Carroll-Ferguson, was born on October 22nd, 1956. She was affectionately called Bern or Bernie. Her siblings and family remember that as a child when Bern stepped out of line and knew what he fate would be (the switch), she would hide for what seemed to be hours hoping that when she returned, her punishment would be forgotten. Much to her surprise mummy didn't forget and was patiently waiting. It was fun watching her dance as she tried to wiggle out of mummy's hands. She possessed a warm and charming personality that was infectious. Bernadette was polite and kind and would always lovingly embrace you with a warm smile. She had a calm and pleasant demeanor that drew other to her.
Bernadette's early education began at Helen Carroll's Prep School on Shirley Street. She attended Bahamas Academy and Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia where she resided with an older sister Rose-Marie Collins. Bern resided in the United States for several years returning home in 1990.
At a very early age Bernadette developed an exceptional talent for music and singing which had its foundation in school and church. She was blessed with an extraordinary singing voice which became her career. Bernadette was an entertainer at heart. Although she worked for a short time at various establishments, singing was her passion. She performed at concerts, at several hotels numerous functions. She also accompanied her musician brother K Komal 'Coey' and his sons Wayne and Romal at performances.
Two years ago Bernadette became terminally ill. She was courageous, cheerful and always assured you that " everything was just fine." Bern insisted on doing things her way and found the strength to make you laugh no matter the challenges and circumstances of life.
Bernadette passed away peacefully while in hospital on the morning of April 6th, 2013. May her soul rest in peace.
