On the 14th day of March 1930, in the beautiful settlement of Long Bay Cay Andros, the coconut palms and emerald waters danced in harmony. On this day the first born of four children was born to Mr. Felix Sr. and Lillian McKinney. This bundle of joy was christened Charles Thomas McKinney.
The fundamentals (God, honesty and hard work) of life's foundation was instilled in Charles at an early age therefore he excelled in his education at Long Bay Cay All-Age-School. Charles was an obedient, independent, devoted young man who loved his family, so when his mother became disabled, he left Andros in search of work at the tender age of fourteen.
Charles relocated to Nassau, and over the years quickly adopted the nickname "Flash". There he met the young beautiful; Ms. Shirley Newchurch, this union produced three children: Lillian, Charles and Veronica McKinney. To support his family "Flash" gained various employment which includes "The Contract" Up until his demise he would tell stories of cotton picking in cold Minnesota. He was also employed as a maintenance worker with Major Holt on the Eastern Road and South Ocean Hotel where he retired.
Charles was an excellent cook who kept a clean house. He adored his grandchildren and would often spoil them with steam codfish, minced crab and monetary gifts. Despite pampering them, he did his best to instill the same values his parents did him and would often repeat Genesis chapter 3 verse 9, " By the sweat of your brow, thou shall eat bread".
Later on in life, Charles developed cataract which eventually led to complete blindness, he was also plagued with pressure. Despite his obstacles, he was never deterred, he would still catch a ride from his residence in Carmichael to Kemp Road to hand on the blocks with " Tall Boy" and crew. Though feisty and a little rough around the edges " Flash was generous and honest and was loved by all he came in contact with.
On Friday, 10th August 2012, Charles suffered a massive stroke and was taken to the hospital. Though critically ill, he still displayed perseverance with a simple gesture such as squeezing a hand or movement of his leg. On Monday, 14th August 2012 with his granddaughter by his side, Charles quietly slipped into eternity.
