There was much excitement and happiness on the morning of 15th May, 1935. This day in May was a special one for the community of Standird Creek, Andros shared in the pride and joy of the arrival of a beautiful baby girl born to the proud parentage of Herbert Sturrup and Theresa Gwendolyn Curry Sturrup Johnson (now deceased). They christen her Doris Cynthia Sturrup. She was the first addition to this union. She was pre-deceased by three children and a granddaughter; Buster Neilly Sturrup, Berkley Neilly Sturrup Sr., Malverne Sturrup and granddaughter Sonovia Neilly Sturrup. Doris as she was affectionately called had a very close relationship with her family, and was a very out spoken person with a sweet disposition. Her love for her family was only surpassed by her love for God.
At an early age Doris took up residence in New Providence Doris grew to be an obedient, caring and loving child. She received her education at St Joseph All-Age School. She was decisive even though that ability sometime causes her regrets. She was loved and respected by all with whom she came into contact with. When difficulty presented themselves she would always strive to overcome them in her gentle smiling and peaceful way. Her world evolved around God, her family, her daughter, grandchildren, great grand children she was delighted in caring for them and attended to their every need. Her greatest pleasure was always cleaning the house and cooking. " One could eat of the floor" Doris was a hard working and industrious woman. She exemplified unlimited energy.
She was employed at the I-Need-A-Laundry for many years, and later was employed as a Domestic Worker in the homes of the Mitchells' and Cargill's family. Her last place of employment was in the Public Service at the Ministry of Environmental Health.
Doris was joined in Holy Matrimony to Mr.Joseph Knowles (Now Deceased).
Doris world was made complete in 1990 when she accepted the Lord Jesus as her personal Savior, at Grants Town Seventh- Day Adventist Church. On 31st March, 1990 she was baptized and received into the membership. Doris loved the Lord, and she believed that one's life must be a testimony of their Christian journey. She shared her faith with many person whom she came into contact with.
The love Doris had for her church and church family was also evident as she actively involved herself for many years in the church choir, where she served until her death.
Over the past five months there was more and more indication that her health was on the decline. She often told her family and loved ones that she was not strong as she use to be.
On 2nd June 2012, she was admitted in the Princess Margaret Hospital, she later discharged June 28 2012. She lived her life in a state of readiness for the day that she would be called home to be with the Lord and Savior.
On Saturday, 6th October 2012, she complained about pain and chest tightness and not being able to breathe. She was taken by ambulance to the Princess Margaret Hospital and after examination she was re-admitted.
On 7th October, 2012 approximately 5:30 a.m. she went to be with the Lord the captain of her salvation, whom she trusted implicitly and served faithfully.
"As she rolled across the trestle Spanning Jordon's swelling tide, She behold the Union depot, Into which her train will slide. There she'll meet the Superintendent God the father, God the son, With the hearty joyous splendor Wearing pilgrim welcome home"
