Obituary

It was cause for celebration in the quiet and picturesque settlement of Lisbon Creek, Mangrove Cay, Andros for the late Elkanah Stuart Sr. and Madaline Stuart nee Miller, when they welcomed the arrival of their third son on the 9th day of September, 1942. They named and christened him Elkanah Stuart Jr.

At an early age Elkanah's parents instilled in him food Christian principles and worshiped at the Anglican Church at St. David's was Elkanah's home Church and most Sundays you can see him singing "bass" for all the hymns.

Elkanah or "Duddy" as he was affectionately called received his early formal education at the " Church School" at Saint David's Anglican Church. He later attended Swains All Age School, which was quite a distance away from his home. It was a joy for Elkanah's parents when a new school was built at "Blue hole", Victoria Point. As a result, he was transferred to that school.

After leaving school, Elkanah migrated to New Providence to seek employment. His first job was at the Ice House where he worked for several years. Later Elkanah relocated to Freeport, Grand Bahama and was employed at the Freeport Power Company. After several years working in Freeport, Grand Bahama he decided to return to his birth place, Lisbon Creek.

Elkanah's last employment was with Local Government in Mangrove Cay, where he was employed as a handyman. He retired in 2007.

Elkanah also loved fishing. It was his job and hobby. Very often he would be seen in Lisbon Creek "sculling" in his small boat coming from the "Bight" with catch of the day. Duddy was a humble and pleasant individual to be around. Always one to greet you with a smile. He was kind and showed love to everyone, especially his family and friends. He was a people's person with a "Heart of Gold".

In August 2013, Elkanah began to experience pain in his left hand and came to New Providence to seek medical attention. Elkanah began to experience pain in his left hand and came to New Providence to seek medical attention. Elkanah spent two weeks with his relatives. During this time, Elkanah assured his family he was beginning a new chapter in his life, this they were very happy to hear. While in Nassau, his younger brother Herbert suggested that he take a photo before returned to Andros. Elkanah was excited to do this. Upon regular conversations with Elkanah's niece, Theresa, she commended him for this new chapter in his life. This new transition was the power of God.

On the morning of December 26th, 2013 Elkanah's brother Raymond and niece, Theresa, noticed that he was not eating his food and complained of stomach pains. His cousins Freddie, David Rolle and his wife Dianne was on the Island during that time and found it strange that they did not see Elkanah. They visited him and found out that indeed he was not well and was not eating. They encouraged him to seek medical attention.

Elkanah came to New Providence on the morning of December 27th, 2013 His brother took him to the Accident and Emergency section of the Princess Margaret Hospital. He was later admitted to the male Surgical 1 Ward.

While in hospital, his relatives visited him twice daily; however, on Wednesday January 1st, 2014 he advised his relatives to visit him during the daytime because the afternoons he would be asleep. His directives were carried out. However, during the midday visit of Friday January 3rd, 2014, there was something strange about him. He was very talkative, a radiant smile and his face was glowing. His relatives asked him whether there was anything he wanted to tell Theresa? He said tell Theresa, "I am right here in the hands of the Good Lord". We all smiled and said "well that's the best hands to be in". He also said that he was ready to go home so he can relax and walk on the bay. Elkanah told his relatives the new items that bought for him that day to take them back because he will not be needing them.

On the Saturday 4th January, 2014, Elkanah too the "early flight". He held on to the hands of his good Lord and left this world. He could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way. He found that peace at the end of the day. If his parting has a void, then fill it with remembered joy. Sleep on Elkanah and take your well deserved rest.
