Obituary

With grace you have completed your race, rest on thou good and faithful servant for you have made your mark in this world. Now bask in all of heaven's wonder and splendour....

In the quiet settlement of Arthur's Town Cat Island, a beautiful bouncing baby girl was born on the 19th day of September 1938 to Henry and Winnifred Miller, they named her Ethel Ann.
Like her two older siblings, Ethel was christened at the St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Cat Island.
She began her early education at the Arthur's Town Public School, and completed her studies with a leaving a teacher's certificate.
Ethel, being the eldest daughter had to take on the role of the second mother in the home caring for her sisters Joyce, Melvina and Betty, which at times made her frustrated when they would rebel and cause an argument which gave her the nickname, "Silby" after her grandmother who was constantly argumentative.
Ethel relocated to Nassau to accompany her brothers, Harold and Ronald on Milton Street in 1958. During this time she was back and forth between Cat Island and Nassau. The three siblings lived together until Harold got married.
Ronald and Ethel then moved to their home in Florida Court, where she earned the nickname "E.M" and took care of her eleven children.
In 1972, she went to Cat Island to accompany her father to a Doctor's visit in Nassau, this would be the last time she would have seen the soil of Cat Island.
Ethel began her career as a school monitor in Cat Island. After coming to Nassau Ethel found herself unemployed. Being a very tenuous young lady she traded on her island skills of plaiting. She sold the straw to the local straw vendors. In 1978, Ethel gained employment with the Boat House on Paradise Island. Ethel fell in love with the beautiful Paradise Island this would become a second home. After leaving the Boat House in 1982 she obtained gainful employment at the Old Sea Plane base known as " Chalks Airline". After a few years of operation the Old Sea Plance airport closed and moved to the Eastern end of the Island and became Merv Griffin's Paradise. Even though the Airline's name changed. Ethel's position remained the same until her retirement in March of 2008.
Ethel enjoyed the view from her porch and the neighborhood family asking her what she had baked, so she delightfully committed to baking at least three times a week which brought her much joy.
In 2009, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, this did not slow her down however, and she never felt ill after her chemotherapy treatments. The cancer went into remission and she went back to her usual rambunctious self. In March 2012, the cancer had spread to her liver and lungs. God decided that he would not allow her to suffer. On Tuesday April 10th Ethel made her peace with the Lord. These were her final words, " Jan i don't think I'm going to make it, please pray for me. Father God, I am a sinner in need of a Savior, your word says that if i confess my sins that you are faithful and just to forgive me, come into my heart Lord Jesus, and be my Savior. "Yes Lord. Thank you Jesus!"
