Obituary

December 13th, 1935 was a cool winter's day on Ragged Island, and on this day in the settlement of Duncan Town, Eugenia Lockhart presented her husband Edward with their second son. He would eventually be the seventh of fifteen children born to this union. With pride, she decided to name him after her own father the renowned Horace Wilson. They christened him Horace Alkin Edward Lockhart.

Horace childhood was spent in Ragged Island as a happy and outgoing child. From an early age he exhibited confident and exceptional social skills. A fond memory of his older sisters is when at the tender age of four, with a swagger that will later become the trademark of a "Lockhart Man", he politely stepped up to the Island's Commissioner during his time of bereavement and said " Happy New Year to you, Cheer up; don't be blue". The Commissioner at the time was the late father of Dr. Kirtland Culmer, who will later become a lifelong friend.

Yes Horace was smart, not only with the ability to memorise and recite numerous quotes and poems but his real genius - even at a young age- was in his craftsmanship. He took pleasure in building small boats and sailing them in the Island's pond, an indication of his passion and emerging genius as a builder and mariner. It was a pleasure that would last a lifetime. Indeed, as a youth Horace was always curious and adventurous, with the good fortune of having a quaint, sunny Island as his playground to explore. He was forever discovering new pleasures and games to play. It was on such an occasion, while swinging from a rope on his uncle's abandoned boat that he broke his arm. Due to the delay in receiving medical assistances the injury resulted in his arm being permanently bent at the elbow. But from this loving childhood of abundance developed a free spirited, passionate and determined man of valour and adventure.

The year was 1950 when the Lockhart family migrated to the capital, New Providence. By this time, Horace had already completed his required formative education, attending Amanda Wallace kindergarten and the Ragged Island All Age School. Horace having been instilled with a strong work ethic from his parents was

eager to find employment and began working with Maria Tsavoussis in her grocery store located on the Market Dock, Bay Street, as a courier. Realising he was exceptionally gifted with his hands he found employment with Denis Fountain Services Station, in Maderia Street as an Auto Body mechanic. Horace became a master Auto Body workman and soon moved on to employment with one of the Island's leading auto repair businesses, Nassau Repair Shop located on Mackey Street. He and his brother Vivian spent many years there and after leaving the company they opened their own repair shop in Peter Street. This experience would develop into a new passion for the brothers, that of car racing. Both Horace and Vivian would build their own race cars and would go on to become race car drivers, giving "Mama" many terrifying moments. It was during this period of his life he met the beautiful and intelligent Celeste Deveaux who he married in 1958. Their beautiful union produced four handsome boys.

"The seas that calls all things unto her" was in Horace's blood; along with his father on the Basil Blackett he perfected his skills as a professorial navigator/ sea captain and one of the country's best divers. He would eventually venture into the fishing industry working full time on the seas. In fact he never truly left the seas, he was a regular at the national regattas and assisted in the building and sailing of many boats such as The Lady Eugenia, The Intrepid and the infamous Unca Boss.

Horace lived, loved, laughed and sometimes cried. He lived a genuinely full life. As life would have it he also had his share of losses. Undoubtedly, he was an individual who chose to do things his way! Around 2005 Horace began experiencing health challenges and suffered his first of many strokes. Thereafter his health continued to deteriorate and eventually he required constant medical attention. His wife Celeste being a care giver by profession readily spearheaded his daily care, and on Friday December 5th, 2014 his earthly voyage ended.
