Proverbs 31 vs 10 – 11
"Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.
The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil"
A TIME TO BE BORN
On February 17, 1925, on the serene settlement of Lovely Bay, Acklins, the union of the late Rev. Solomon and Estella Hanna-Johnson welcomed the birth of their seventh child. They named their joy "Nathalie". She was the first daughter to be born. Nathalie was well loved and was a devoted daughter to her parents.
A TIME FOR EDUCATION
Natalie attended the Lovely Bay All Age School, however; the family later moved to Morant Bay where she completed her studies at Morant Bay School.
A TIME FOR MARRIAGE & FAMILY
She grew up to be a beautiful young woman. In her grace and beauty, she captured the eyes of Hubert "Huel" Scavella. They fell in love and was united in holy matrimony on November 17, 1943. After their marriage, they relocated to Crooked Island. Natalie loved to farm and assisted her husband sometimes in the field. In the 1960s, a decision was made by this couple to relocate the entire family to Nassau. This union was blessed with ten children. Because of the tie that binds Christian love, the union was blessed with 72 years of marital bliss. She always gave thanks to God for her husband and children. Nathalie, also affectionately called "mama", "mother", "mema" and "titty" was instrumental in nurturing her family to know the awesomeness of God and power He has in sustaining His people. Mama firmly believed in her God and ensured that her children were brought up in the fear and nature of Him.
Titty loved her husband tremendously and gave praises to him because he was a devoted father, husband, and provider for the family. To highlight her gratitude to her "Boaz", she would say, "you see that man there, he never mistreated me or abused me, but took great care of me. I thank God for Daddy!" Mother did not work but was provided for highly by her loyal and dedicated husband, Hubert.
Mother, the matriarch, was a devoted, faithful, and dutiful housewife who cared for her family. Many sought Titty for motherly advice and consultation. Mother was a great historian where she recanted stories of her childhood, dates and deaths of family members, and migration from the Family Islands to New Providence. Mother told interesting stories to her children, grand, and great grandchildren on the front porch. Titty's recollection was so profound that dates and times were recalled as far back as the 1940s. One story, she always told, was how her late father was the only survivor on a boat the capsized during the hurricane. Mema always conversed about her deceased parents. She stressed that her parents loved God and provided for her and her siblings.
This matriarch was kind and tender hearted. Persons, who visited her home, would always leave with a token. Additionally, she would give Godly wisdom that assisted persons who were troubled or needed direction.
A TIME TO WORSHIP
She started her Christian journey at Zion Baptist Church, Fairfield, Crooked Island. When Meme relocate to Nassau, she joined the congregation of her late brother Bishop Curtis Johnson at St. Joel Baptist church which was renamed Hillside Missionary Baptist Church. Mama and her husband were among the first founding members of this edifice. Mama was an active member in her church where she was a member of the Senior Choir, Missionary Circle, and Prayer Band. Wow! Nathalie, was a joyful giver. She believed that the more you give, the more you would receive. Over the years, her health began to fail. Mama was unable to attend services, but her church's leader's prayed and administered Holy Communion to her.
A TIME TO BID FARE-WELL
In December, 2014 mama was not feeling well, and her daughter Halcie took her to the hospital. On December 23, 2014 she was admitted to the hospital to receive further medical attention. During her stay in hospital, Mama continued to give God praise and honor. Mama told her children that she is going home now. Further, Mother prayed and announced God's blessings on her children, grand, and great-grand- children. Titty further reiterated that her parents were great to her and she gave God thanks for them. Mama continued giving her God praises and thanks for allowing her to see 89 years. Nathalie's lingering lasting words to the family were "live in peace". Mama was dismissed from the hospital on December 30, 2014 where she showed signs of progress. On January 6, 2015, the Lord decided to visit his precious Gem with Him to be in Paradise.
