On November 25th, 1922, at Bennett's Harbour, Cat Island a baby girl was born to Marietta Simon and Elijah Carey,
of Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera. She was name Remanda Jane Carey. Remanda attended the all-age-school at Dumfries, Cat
Island, until age (11) Eleven, at which time her family relocated to Nassau. There she attended the Public School located
on Shirley Street.
In 1940, at the age of (18) eighteen she entered the Nursing Training School at The Bahamas General Hospital. She
graduated as a registered Nurse in 1944. That same year she was married to her childhood sweetheart, Mr. Frank Monty
Cooper I. Her first assignment was the Psychiatric Ward where she worked until 1946.
After the Second World, many Bahamians were contracted to work in the United States and a larger X-Ray Department,
was created to accommodate them. She supervised the X-Ray Department, until 1957, under the direction of
Dr. L. Higgins.
In 1957, after a year of training at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami Florida, she was selected to start The Electro-
Cardiogram Department. (E.C.G.) under Dr. Cecil Bethel. She ended her Public Service Career there in 1976. In
Recognition of her contributions to Public Health, her photograph is included on the "Wall of Fame" at the Princess
Margaret Hospital.
After her retirement from Government service, she went into Private Nursing on a Full Time Basis. During this period
she had the opportunity to render her service to many, including Sir Milo B. Butler, both parents of Sir Stafford Sands
and Mrs. & Mr. Trevor Kelly.
In 1988 she fully retired from nursing and moved to Bennett's Harbour, together with her youngest son, Mr. Patrick A.
Cooper (Pre-Deceased).
She suffered a slight stroke in 2002 and returned to reside in Nassau with Daughter Gloria who cared for her until the
evening of Tuesday August 12th 2014 when she quietly passed into eternity.
