On the 13th June 1916 in the quiet Settlement of Bannerman Town – Eleuthera, a baby
boy was born to the proud parents of Samuel and Diana McPhee. They named him Robert
Hallan McPhee. During his childhood, Robert attended the Bannerman Town All Aged
School, under the tutorship of Mr. John Solomon, where he developed excellent leadership
qualities.
Robert was the eighth child of twenty-one children, and at the early age of seventeen, he
left home to start a trade as a Tailor with Mr. Leonard White. Robert was an excellent Tailor.
He operated his Tailor Shop on Bay and Armstrong Street where he sewed for men and
women for many years. In 1942 when his second son was born, Robert began to drive
a Limousine at night, and continued his Tailoring career during the day. Robert
was awarded numerous awards for outstanding service rendered to the Ground
Transportation Industry in the Bahamas. As a Limousine Driver, Robert was
an active member of the Progressive Liberal Party and a Stalwart Council
Member.
On the 13th August 1938, Robert was joined in marriage to Susan Elizabeth
Knowles of Bannerman Town, Eleuthera. This union produced 3 sons, Robert
Clyde (who predeceased his parents), Garfield and George; 3 daughters
Eunice Garnell, Dianne (who predeceased her parents), and Madline Albertha
McPhee.
Robert out lived all of his siblings. He had a very fruitful life. Robert was the
proud father of seven children, two pre-deceased him. He also adopted two of
his grandchildren from infants, Miss Patrice McPhee and Lawrence McAllen
Rolle.
For many years, along with his adopted brother George McKinney, Robert
was employed at Cedar Crest Funeral Home as a lead Limousine Driver, and
was with the establishment for 21 years until he retired a few years ago when he
became ill.
Robert was a member of The Annex Baptist Cathedral for many years, at that time; the church was under the leadership of Rev. Alexander Black.
