"SO HE GIVETH HIS BELOVETH SLEEP" Psalm 127:2
Van Derek Ferguson was born on Saturday, April 30th, 1955 in New Providence. He was the first born son of Juanita Davis and George Ferguson.
Van grew up in a happy and nurturing home with his mother and his aunt 'Renie' who cherished him.
He began his early education at Jordon Prince William School and graduated from Aquinas College in 1972.
He was an avid basketball player who played throughout his high school years. Later he joined the "Cougars Basketball Team."
From the birth of his only daughter Vandeka, whom he affectionately call 'Sister Deeks".he had an extraordinary close relationship which grew even deeper when his grand boys came along. He also had a special place in his heart for his son Omar.
Van's career commenced at the Royal Bahamas Police Force as a Constable where he served his Country well. His outgoing personality and love for people prompted him to join the Hospitality Industry with Majestic Tours. This experience took him to many different countries where he built many new and lasting friendships.
Van's desire for adventure took many colourful turns and thus more career changes. He worked in San Salvador at Club Med as a Chef, and then later moved to Exuma where he joined the construction staff at February Point as a carpenter. Even though Van was a novice carpenter at this time, over the years he mastered this trade.
It was during his stay in Exuma that he drew close to God. He did not attend church regularly but he never failed to read his bible daily. He would always ask his mother if she read her bible or if she said her prayers for the day.
When the economy took a down-turn, he returned to New Providence. After much searching, he rejoined the hospitality industry with The Symonette Group (Bahamas Experience) in 2010. He remained with this company up until the time of his demise.
Van thoroughly enjoyed his work. His interpersonal skills were evident with his colleagues and all with whom he came into contact.
During February 2013 Van's health began to fail. Fortunately, he did not undergo this journey alone. His mother, daughter, siblings and family members were on this journey with him – doctors' visits, hospitalization and home-care. He was admitted to hospital May 21st. 2013 and his health continued to decline. While visiting him on Thursday, June 13th he gave his sister Sharon a big smile then turned his head. On Saturday, June 15th, at 8:20 a.m. Van peacefully passed into the arms of his Saviour.
