Obituary

It was a happy blessed occasion when Joseph Hunt and Minerva Major were blessed with a strong healthy baby boy on February 22, 1932 at Acklins Island and they named him Vance Wadsworth Hunt Major, the eldest of four siblings. He was the apple of their eyes.
Mr. Major was transferred to Kemp's Bay. Andros. Vance's education began at Kemps Bay All Age School where his father (J. H. Major) was the Principal. As a young child, Vance attended the schools wherever his father was the Principal.

After graduating from High School, Vance began employment with the Telecommunication Company where he worked diligently for fourty-five years before his retirement. During the years at the Telephone Company, he had many opportunities to travel throughout the Caribbean and the United States where he gained knowledge and spent all of his working life. He also worked part-time at the British Colonial Hotel as a Cashier (a second job to support his family).

Vance was a member of Toastmaster Club 1600, President of Bahamas Communications & Public Officers Union, where he was given an award for Appreciation, Achievement and Devotion as President of the Union. He was a strong and hard worker for the Free National Movement where he was very active and dedicated member. He worked with and supported many other civic organizations.

Elder Major gave his life to Christ at an early age at East Street Gospel Chapel where he was involved in the Young People's Movement. In 1987, he rededicated his life to the Lord and became a member of Abundant Life Bible Chapel where he worshiped for fifteen years and held the position as a Deacon. In 1955, along with several other brothers, 'Vision Community Church' was birthed under the leadership of Pastor Prince Bodie where he served diligently as an Elder until his health began to fail in 2011.

Elder Major served whenever and wherever he was needed, he touched the lives of all he came in contact with especially the young people. He was a Bible Scholar and knew and lived God's Word. He ministered with courage, daring, bravery, and boldness, self confidence, assurance, audacity, enthusiasm, passion and zeal. His heart was heavy for his children family and the young men of our nation. Elder Major would pray for hours for his family, country and the world at large. He loved politics, world news and any information dealing with people coming together; but he loved the word of the Lord above all. Taking John 18:37 "To recognize the voice of the Lord, you must belong to Him". He belonged to the Lord with every fiber of himself; he cherished the opportunity to tell others about the Lord.

Approximately eight months ago, Vance became confined due to declining health. Through it all, the Lord sustained him as he exhibited a meek and quiet spirit. On Sunday, 22nd September, 2013 after being feed his last earthly meal by his wife Carolyn, the inevitable came. AT 6:30A.M., Vance quietly and peacefully slipped away from earth to glory.
