On 20th July 1926 the 5th child of Richard and Frances Simons was born at their home located on West Bay Street on the property where the Fort Charlotte Police Station is now located. At birth the baby boy was given the name Vincent DePaul but as he grew he took on the nickname "Pope." This name became more popular with everyone than his given name at birth. Shortly after "Pope's" birth there was a threat of a severe hurricane headed for Nassau and because the family lived on the border of Long Wharf Beach the threat of certain danger forced them to move to Nassau and Dean Street where they took up residence.
As a child "Pope" attended Curry Mission Primary, Western Junior and Senior Schools and upon completion and in search of financial stability he became employed with Cecil Jones as an Electrician then he worked with Hampton Wray. As he became better qualified as a professional electrician he ventured fully into the career and soon became self-employed to better enable him to take care of his family.
While it is not known how "Pope" got his nickname, in retrospect one would assume that because he was such a gentle, soft spoken, easy going, God faring individual he must have emulated the pontiff of the era he was born in "Pope Pius XI"
Pope met and married Sylvia Grimes and they moved into the marital home situated on Virginia Street. From this wonderful union came 1 girl (Arnett) and 4 boys (Andy, Philip, Michael and Steven). Andy predeceased him.
After fifty-five years of marital bliss on 6th December 2006 Sylvia went on to her eternal rest with the Lord. Pope continued to work for three years after Sylvia's death and in 2009 he decided to retire from active work and relax. This is exactly what he did as almost on a daily basis he would take a slow short stroll from Virginia Street to Long Wharf now known as Junkanoo Beach, where he would no doubt reminisce on all the joyous scenes of life, as he sat on the bench and sometimes on the wall facing the beautiful scene of the beautiful water and beach and all the surrounding activities. Over the last year due to declining health "Pope" was forced to discontinue his visits to the beach but continued remembering the good life that he lived.
On Thursday 18th December 2014 Pope was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital and on the night of Monday 22nd December 2014 Vincent "Pope" Simons answered the call by his master and went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ and receive his Glorious reward.
He will be fondly remembered by all the lives he touched.
