Obituary

On May 8th, 1944 a spirited baby boy was born to the proud parents of Earnest and Mary Anne Seymour in the picturesque settlement of Knowles, Cat Island. He was the 7th of the 12 children of this union and was named Wilberforce Otis Seymour.

He received his education at Knowles All age school. At the age of 18, Wilberforce relocated to Nassau seeking employment and landed a position at Bahamas Telecommunication for a few years. He then briefly worked with Star Insurance Company as a sales representative, after which, he joined the Bahamas Customs Department as an officer in 1968, where he moved up the ranks and retired as a Chief Customs Officer.

In December 1962 while attending a church Christmas play, Wilberforce laid eyes on the young beautiful Rosemarie Smith. He immediately fell for her. Letters "from" his parents were written "to" her parents, consent was given and the courtship began. Wilberforce married his 'rose' on May 10th, 1965. This union was blessed with seven adorable children: four boys and three girls.

Wilberforce was well loved by all he came in contact with and could be relied on. Affectionately called "wild child"/ "Deco Marley", he engaged in Regatta throughout the islands especially Cat Island where he was also the president of the association for a period of time. He owned two C-classed boats: "Janiah" and "The Wild Child". The Janiah, named after one of his granddaughters, won numerous trophies. Besides sailing, he loved fishing on his boat "The Water Lover". He enjoyed reciting fishing experiences with family and friends.

In the year 2006, his activities begun to slow down when he had his first stroke. In 2008 he moved back home with his wife and three of his grandchildren. He still managed to keep busy weeding the yard, doing little farming, fishing on the rock, and most important instilling discipline in Jayde, Kenteeshe and Tahj.

In 2013, Wilberforce had a second stroke in Cat Island and had to return to Nassau and settle due to constant hospital trips. On February 15th 2015 He took a turn for the worst. Hours later, the Lord called Wilberforce home to be with Him
