Obituary

On the 11th day of April, 1940 much joy illuminated the home of the late Dorrington and Josephine Ferguson. This young couple experienced a great miracle when they were blessed with a beautiful bouncing baby girl. They named her Winifred Sylvia. They affectionately called her "Winnie".

Winnie grew up to be a very special child to her parents, stepmother Cleolah Ferguson (deceased) and her paternal and maternal Grand-parents.

Winnie was raised in a good Christian home, where godly principles and values were taught. This was the foundation on which she based her life.

Winnie blossomed into a beautiful young woman and in 1958 she met and fell in love and married the handsome young gentleman, Van Williamson now deceased.

She was educated at Southern Junior & Senior Schools and attended various courses in skills/ trade at local institutions such as; The Dundas Centre and Madame Owen Sewing School.

As a young woman, Winnie sought employment in the Service Industry and worked for more than two decades at Mademoiselle Limited, working her way up to become one of the top managers of that company.

With her pioneering spirit, Winnie ventured into her own business. For more than three decades, she has managed for herself a few thriving and successful businesses. Winnie was one of the few women of color to own and operate a successful business in one of Nassau's leading hotels in the l980's. Winnie's legacy as a Business Woman is par excellence.

Being the eldest child, Winnie always took the responsibility to nurture and support her other siblings. After the death of her mother, Winnie with such great strength and wisdom became the matriarch of the Ferguson family. Everyone looked up to her for guidance and advice. She was a firm, no-nonsense woman who commanded the respect of others. Her children saw her as a disciplinarian and always knew their limitations. Because of her entrepreneurial spirit, her children were driven to become entrepreneurs and professionals each in their own right.

By way of employment, she has nurtured numerous young girls into strong independent women with good survival skills.

A woman of God, Winnie always sought divine guidance from almighty God in all her deliberations. She loved her church dearly: The Church of God of Prophecy. She faithfully served in the Protocol Ministry and was also a member of the Ladies Fellowship. She lived by her favorite scripture, Psalms 118:vs.1 "OH GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD; FOR HE IS GOOD: BECAUSE HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOREVER."
